The 33-year-old defensive end, who has played for six different franchises over 11 seasons, had initially considered retirement when he departed from the Philadelphia Eagles mid-season in October 2025. Before ultimately signing with Atlanta, his seventh NFL team, Smith visited with the Cleveland Browns. He emphasized that football became an essential outlet during what he described as a brutal stretch in his life.

"This is my happy place," Smith stated. "Come back, play football. I was in a dark place, but, you know, coming out, running out on the field, the fans, not just the fans, man, the joy that I get from winning and just getting sacks."

A poignant motivation for his move to Atlanta was also rooted in a cherished family wish. "My mom, rest her soul, man, she always wanted me to be in Atlanta with the Falcons," he shared.
