The United States Coast Guard recently recovered more than a ton of suspected marijuana, with an estimated street value exceeding $2.4 million, after its crews successfully intercepted a suspicious high-speed vessel during a maritime patrol, according to military officials.
A total of 47 bales, collectively weighing 2,082 pounds, were retrieved along the intercepted vessel's previous course, as reported by Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S).
Four individuals were taken into custody in connection with this operation, JIATF-S confirmed.
Details of the Interception
Officials stated that the seizure occurred during a routine patrol when the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba identified a suspicious go-fast vessel. A smaller boat crew was then dispatched to investigate.
“The vessel stopped without further incident,” JIATF-S noted.
During subsequent operations, Coast Guard personnel located what authorities described as a “bale field” along the track the vessel had previously taken. From this area, they recovered the suspected marijuana, which has a market value of over $2.4 million.
“This mission required vigilance, professionalism, and seamless coordination from detection and pursuit to evidence recovery and search-and-rescue support,” JIATF-S commented on the operation.
While JIATF-S did not disclose the precise location of the incident, the agency expressed gratitude to the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Haiti for their “timely support, search assistance, and coordination throughout the operation,” suggesting the incident occurred in the wider Caribbean or Western Hemisphere region.
Broader Anti-Drug Trafficking Efforts
This drug seizure is part of the current administration's ongoing campaign aimed at disrupting narcotics trafficking networks operating throughout the Western Hemisphere.
U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) commended the operation, stating that the “bust is another demonstration of the United States' resolve to stop the flow of dangerous drugs into the homeland.”
Earlier this week, SOUTHCOM reported conducting two separate operations where U.S. forces intercepted and sank vessels in the Eastern Pacific. These vessels were identified by the military as being linked to Los Choneros, which SOUTHCOM characterized as a violent narco-terrorist organization.
The U.S. military has been engaged in a multi-month campaign, initiated by the administration, focused on dismantling cartel-linked trafficking networks. This effort has included dozens of strikes in both the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean, targeting vessels believed to be connected to “narco-terrorists.”
Previous Major Seizure
The recent marijuana bust follows another significant drug interdiction by the Coast Guard last month off the coast of Puerto Rico.
In that incident, the Coast Guard intercepted a suspected smuggling boat nearly 50 miles offshore from the U.S. territory. Crews discovered over 7,000 pounds of cocaine, estimated to be worth approximately $54.5 million.
Five individuals aboard that suspected smuggling vessel were apprehended and taken into custody as part of the investigation into that particular incident.
