Patrick Mahomes Sr. Seeks Court Approval to Attend Son's Games Amid DWI Probation

Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of the prominent Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has formally petitioned a Texas court to permit him to attend his son's professional football games during the upcoming season. Mahomes Sr. is currently serving a five-year probation term following a conviction for driving while intoxicated.

The motion was submitted on Friday to the 7th District Court in Tyler, Texas. In his filing, Mahomes Sr. specifically requested authorization to travel outside the state of Texas for seven games. These requested destinations include Kansas City, Missouri; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Probationary Conditions and Compliance Efforts

Mahomes Sr. acknowledged in his court filing the specific requirements for out-of-state travel under his probation terms. These conditions stipulate that he must undergo urinalysis testing both before and after each trip and is required to notify his supervising officer whenever he intends to leave the state.

His guilty plea for driving while intoxicated occurred in 2024, leading to the initial five-year probation sentence. However, in February 2026, Mahomes Sr. was arrested for violating his probation conditions after consuming alcohol, as confirmed by Smith County District Attorney Jacob Putman. This violation resulted in an additional two years being added to his probation period.

The recent motion highlights Mahomes Sr.'s efforts toward compliance. It states that he has successfully completed 16 weeks of outpatient treatment and fulfilled 160 hours of community service. Furthermore, the filing asserts that Mahomes Sr. has adhered to all current probation stipulations and is subject to continuous monitoring via an ankle monitor. The motion indicates that a Smith County community supervision officer can verify these compliance details.

Mahomes Jr.'s Season Preparations

While the legal proceedings unfold for his father, Patrick Mahomes Jr. is preparing for the start of the Chiefs' season. The team is scheduled to kick off their campaign against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 1. Although an official confirmation of his start has not been issued, the two-time MVP appears poised to be on the field.

Mahomes Jr. underwent surgery in December to address torn ligaments in his knee. Despite this recovery, he has consistently participated in drills with the first-string offense throughout training camp. He did not, however, feature in any preseason games.

"He's going to keep practicing just like he's been doing," Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters Wednesday. "These are more like practice here, a lot of one-versus-one play these next couple of days. That's a good thing."
