Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens Urges Senate Nominee El-Sayed to Distance from Streamer Hasan Piker

Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, has publicly called on Abdul El-Sayed, the state's newly designated Democratic Senate candidate, to end his association with the contentious progressive streamer Hasan Piker. Speaking on "The Sunday Briefing," Stevens, who was defeated by El-Sayed in the recent intense Democratic primary, stressed the importance of the nominee shifting his focus toward the broader Michigan electorate as he prepares for the general election.

Despite offering her support to El-Sayed, Stevens reiterated her earlier criticisms of Piker, affirming her continued dedication to the Democratic Party.

"It certainly makes sense to get rid of this Hasan Piker affiliation," Stevens stated. She also highlighted that the Democratic Party's proposals for healthcare, strengthening democracy, and supporting Black-owned businesses surpass those offered by Republican Mike Rogers, El-Sayed's opponent in the upcoming Senate contest.

Reaching Diverse Electorates

When questioned about whether El-Sayed had taken any steps beyond securing the Democratic nomination to gain the confidence of demographics that had favored her, including Jewish voters, Black voters, or traditional Reagan-era Democrats, Stevens referenced her own strong showing among these groups. She identified herself as a Zionist Democrat and affirmed the party's capacity to accommodate all such communities.

I came really close [to winning the primary] and I'm still a Democrat. I'm still out here talking about my views and values. I want the people who share my views and values to feel safe and to feel heard in the Democratic Party.

Crucial Senate Battle Ahead

The contest to fill the seat of outgoing Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who had endorsed Stevens, is considered vital for Democrats. This race is among approximately a dozen Senate elections nationwide that are anticipated to decide if Republicans maintain their slim majority in the chamber.

El-Sayed and Rogers are slated to compete in Michigan's pivotal Senate election scheduled for November 3.
