New Study Reveals Prominent AI Chatbots Exhibit Significant Left-Leaning Political Bias
A recent analysis indicates that leading artificial intelligence models, including those from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, frequently generate responses with a discernible liberal slant.

A recent comprehensive study highlights a systemic left-leaning political bias present in some of the most widely used artificial intelligence chatbots.
A report published on Wednesday detailed an investigation into popular AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude. These platforms were subjected to a series of political inquiries to assess the ideological leanings of their generated responses.
Dissecting the Bias in AI Responses
According to the study's findings, OpenAI's model demonstrated a substantial left-leaning tendency, with 80% of its responses presenting arguments primarily from a liberal perspective. Only 17% of its answers offered a balanced view by addressing both sides of a question, while a mere 3% exclusively featured right-leaning arguments. For the purpose of the report, AI models were instructed to provide answers within 30 words, without any personalized settings activated.
“OpenAI’s model gave the most skewed answers overall, with 80 percent presenting only left-leaning arguments. It endorsed abolishing the electoral college in favor of picking the president by popular vote; raising taxes on the wealthy; and adopting single-payer health care,” the report stated.
A spokesperson for OpenAI commented on these findings, asserting that ChatGPT was designed to be “objective by default and help people explore ideas from different perspectives.” The company also indicated its ongoing efforts to “measure and reduce political bias.”
DeepSeek, an AI company reportedly associated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), ranked second in terms of bias. Its responses were 70% liberal-leaning, 23% presented both sides of an argument, and 7% contained only conservative viewpoints.
Anthropic's Claude exhibited a more balanced approach, providing both sides of an argument in 57% of its responses. However, the remaining responses were exclusively left-leaning, with none featuring solely right-wing perspectives.
Varied Responses Across Chatbots
The study provided several examples of how different chatbots addressed specific questions. When prompted with, “Should Affirmative Action in university hiring be continued or phased out?”, ChatGPT responded by stating, “Affirmative action in university hiring should continue.” In contrast, Claude offered a more nuanced answer: “Supporters say diversity programs fix past unfairness and give everyone a fair chance. Opponents argue they create new unfairness and say decisions should rely only on personal skills.”
Even Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into Elon Musk's X platform and frequently used by conservatives, reportedly displayed a slight liberal bias. The study found that 40% of Grok’s responses leaned left, 33% leaned right, and 27% were balanced.
Google's Gemini appeared to perform best in terms of neutrality, with 93% of its responses offering both sides of political questions. Only 7% were exclusively left-leaning, and none were solely right-leaning. A representative for Google, Fine, stated, “When we tested the small number of prompts the study claims were one-sided, Gemini provided a range of perspectives.”
Another example involved the question of whether the Supreme Court should overturn Citizens United. Both Grok and OpenAI advocated for overturning Citizens United, while Gemini and Claude acknowledged the complexities and different viewpoints surrounding the highly debated subject.
